Personal Work | Nico Hend
The other camera.
I'm Nico Henderson, a photographer based in San Francisco's Mission District, where I've lived since the late 90s.
I like to wander. I like to make photographs.
Street scenes shaped how I see, and that way of seeing has followed me everywhere. My personal work isn't built around a single subject. I'm interested in atmosphere, quiet moments, beauty and decay, humor, and the relationship between people, places, and light.
Looking and seeing aren't quite the same thing. There's a certain state of mind I love, somewhere between being in the world and being lost in thought. It's a quiet place where the outside world and my inner world seem to overlap. Things start to reveal themselves differently. A tree shape, a shadow, a crow, a gesture, a strange bit of light.
Curiosity and mystery seem to follow each other. Some things reveal themselves over time. Some remain mysterious. Both are part of the pleasure.
Photography keeps giving me reasons to look more closely. The more I do it, the more I realize how much there is to notice.
The rest of the time: my cats, walks, films, books, and running my business.
